LET THE OLD STUFF GO! #418 By, Fontella Calhoun

Every year on my birthday I try to give myself something I need just for me! As life brings many challenges, sorrows, celebrations, disappointments and triumphs, my life’s needs have changed each year! One year I remember I needed a washer and dryer, another year I needed a pamper me basket from Dollar Tree, another year I needed a divorce!!! Well this year I needed an outlet for my creative energy that has been bottled up for too long! In the middle of my career as an assistant principal in an elementary school, my busy life as a wife, mother, volunteer, choir member, V.P of a women’s fellowship, founder of a Girls and Boys program AND…. A student working on my doctorate, I still need something else! God gave me this creative energy that I cannot and will not suppress! My inner spirit aches to be creative and when I am not creating, I do not feel well. I do not feel like myself. I feel incomplete and broken. That’s what happens when we don’t use what God gives us!

So this year, Happy Birthday to me! I opened my own little shop, 418…. I upcycle great home décor and special items to make a woman’s personal space amazing! I love what I do on top of all the other millions of responsibilities I have! Thank you God for my creativity and for allowing me to use it. There have been times in my life in the past when I had no creativity energy at all because I was down, out and couldn’t see my way… I was down on myself, my circumstances and could not find the energy to even get out of bed, but God turned it all around! But God! I kept praying because I had nothing else left to do…. And my worries turned into my work and my work turned into my worth!

I believe now that God performs miracles, whereas in the past I only read about them and had no idea I was living inside His miracle for me. He is the most incredible of anything I have ever known. I now know what I ask for He will give. I now know everything is possible with Him. Through God I get to leave my past behind. I get to dump my fears, worries and negativity others bring and He turns my obstacles into stepping stones for my golden future! On my birthday 418 is a testimony that if God can bring me out of darkness, He can bring you out as well! If God can take a homeless woman with two children, twenty dollars & some change and give her a Master’s Degree and soon to be doctorate, He can turn the world around for you!
